Es ist einfach und spannend geschrieben, auch für den Laien gut lesbar und stellt andererseits für den »Fachmann« eine Position dar, mit der sich gründlich auseinanderzusetzen er nicht umhin kann. Der originellste Aspekt dieser Position ist der Ausgangspunkt beim Begriff des Übels. Man könnte insofern Gerts Position als einen negativen Utilitarismus bezeichnen. Gegen den gewöhnlichen Utilitarismus wird der Primat des Begriffs des Übels gegen den des Guten hervorgehoben. Ebenso wichtig ist für Gert der Begriff der Handlungsrationalität. Ein Übel ist nach Gert etwas, was alle Menschen, wenn sie nur rational sind, zu vermeiden versuchen. Daraus folgt, daß es für alle rational ist, universale Regeln öffentlich zu befürworten. So ergeben sich »moralische Grundregeln«, durch deren Explikation Gert die in ethischen Schriften so häufige Verflüchtigung in die Abstraktion vermeidet.
