Er unterrichtete zunächst Englisch, Griechisch und Recht an der Universität Sydney (1971-1977). 1992 wechselte er als Dozent für Neues Testament an die St. Andrews University, wo er 1995 zum Professor für Bibelkritik befördert wurde. 2010 - 2013 war er dann Professor für Bibelauslegung am St. Mary's University College, Twickenham, bevor er 2013 zum Professor und Lehrstuhlinhaber für Studien über das Neue Testament an der University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham ernannt wurde. | ||
