| 678 | |b Crowther wurde in Nigeria geboren, in seiner Jugend von den Briten von einem portugiesischen Sklavenschiff befreit, nach Freetown in Sierra Leone gebracht, wo er in Englisch unterrichtet wurde und zum Christentum konvertierte; nach einem Aufenthalt in England kehrte er nach Nigeria zurück, studierte Latein und Griechisch und engagierte sich in sozialen Projekten; in der Folge einer Teilnahme eine Nigerexpedition im Jahre 1841 unter James Schön wurde er in London zum Priester geweiht, dann im Jahr 1864 zum ersten Bischof der Anglikanischen Kirche in Afrika; nach seiner Rückkehr aus London 1843, begann er die Bibel in die Yoruba-Sprache zu übersetzen und ein Wörterbuch dieser Sprache zu erstellen; darüber hinaus kompilierte er Wörterbücher und Grammatiken der Sprache der Igbo und der Nupe. | ||
